Trout
Angling
Where ?
Mainly on the river Barrow, although
occasionally caught on the river Figile and the river Slate. Click on
association waters for more detail.
How ?
Bait
Fishing:
ledgered worm: Tie on a size 8
swivel to your main line and then a hook length of about 18-24
inches with a size 6 hook. Depending on flow add split shot . Cast in across a pool and let it swing around in the flow
and settle. If after 10-15 minutes, no bites were detected repeat
this process and work your way through the pool.
Free lined worm: Set up as
above with split shot just holding back your bait slower than the
flow of river. Cast in and walk along the river/pool keeping in
contact with your bait. The aim of free lining is to present the
bait flowing down the river as natural as possible. Keep your finger
on the main line so that you can detect the softest of bites.
Artificial Lures/Spinning:
Cast small spinners across the river
and retrieve. Mix up the speed of retrieve, this may provoke a take
from a following fish. Cast spinners upstream and then retrieved
just faster than the flow of water to spin the blades. This method
of up stream spinning is good for catch and release as the fish are
nearly always hooked in the scissors of the mouth.
Fly fishing:
Wet fly: Wet flies are fished
under the surface of the water. If you are using more than one fly
tie on droppers at 3ft apart. Cast across the river and let the
flies swing around in the current, mending(flicking up stream) the
line as necessary to eliminate the current dragging the flies to
fast and to let the flies to get deeper in the water.
Dry Fly: Dry flies are fished
on the surface of the water. Normally only one fly is used. Cast
upstream and over rising fish. Let the current bring the fly drag
free back over the rising fish. Hopefully the fish will come up and
take your fly, when this happens lift the rod to tighten into the
fish.
